A Bullet To The Brain…
As a medical student (many years prior to becoming a business motivational speaker) I stumbled across a simple idea which changed my life…
I learned that it’s possible to destroy a brain tumor by zapping it with a narrow beam of high-energy radiation directly. However - like a bullet - the dose of radiation required to eradicate the growth also destroys normal brain along the entire path of the beam. The challenge is to deliver a lethal dose of radiation to the tumor, while sparing the surrounding normal brain.
The solution is to divide the total dose of radiation into hundreds of beams and focus each beam on the growth from a different angle.
In this way, a lethal dose can be delivered to the tumor (at the point where all beams intersect) while the surrounding brain only receives a tiny fraction of the total amount.
This medical technique got me thinking about the idea of solving a problem (any problem) by approaching it from multiple angles. As I explored this idea, I got deeper and deeper into exactly why we miss the screamingly obvious clues to better solutions and get overly frustrated by even the minuscule irritations in our lives. (And what to do about it.) Over time, I streamlined my discoveries into a handful of idiot-proof strategies…no offense!
