A Bullet To The Brain…

As an undergraduate at medical school (long before I left medicine to become a healthcare speaker) I came across a straightforward notion which transformed the direction of my life…

I discovered that it's feasible to obliterate a brain cancer by irradiating it with a narrow beam of high-energy gamma irradiation. However - like a bullet - the amount of gamma rays required to eradicate the tumor also obliterates disease-free brain along the entire path of the beam. The challenge is to deliver a toxic amount of gamma rays to the cancer, while sparing the neighboring normal brain.

The answer is to split up the gamma rays into hundreds of beams and center each beam on the tumor from a slightly different direction. Using this technique a lethal dosage can be targeted at growth (at the site where every beam intersects) whereas the adjacent healthy brain only receives a small fraction of the full dose.

This therapeutic procedure got me wondering about the notion of figuring out a problem by studying it from different angles.

This proved so useful that, as I journeyed across continents (teaching, practicing medicine and doing medical research) I began piecing together a simple process for easily changing my point of view on any situation. My goal was to bridge the crevasse between neuroscience and directed, effective action.
